06:33 pm - now trying not to: throw up For those late to the party: the most famous murder in Tennessee between 1906 (Sen. Carmack) and 2009 (QB McNair) took place half a mile from my house, and wrecked my neighborhood, and the victim was a former schoolmate of mine. The crime was unsolved for 34 years.

10:03 am - car trouble--staccato version Saturday afternoon, car wouldn't start in a parking lot. Dinner time, so called mom to come get me. Ate, looked up the address, got my AAA card and cellaphone. Went back and called AAA. Embarassing part: telling the operator "it's right in front of the Big Lots."
Jumper man charged the battery, but it still wouldn't start. Has a Passive Security System kicked in? Didn't know I had one.
Called a tow truck. Waited. Chatted. Was blocked in by an SUV. Went into Big Lots; got the cashier to make an announcement. Exiting customer tells me "the speaker wasn't on--no one heard that." Went back in. Using fuzzy memory, managed to find the woman from the SUV. She spoke no English. She called her husband Luis from the next aisle. Got him to understand. He moved their Tahoe.
Towed (actually carried) my car to PepBoys. It was now 8 p.m. on a Saturday, so everything was closed. Talked to the night manager who was sweeping up.
Sunday morning, PepBoys called. They'll need $200 to do a complete Electrical Diagnostic. Sunday evening they called again--Ignition Cylinder has gone bad.
Car still under warranty. Left a message with CarMax, which isn't open on Sundays for service. Monday morning exchanged three phone calls with AAA about moving the car. Also two calls with PepBoys and three with CarMax. Went by PepBoys to pay them off; chatted with the service manager. Monday suppertime, CarMax calls. It's done.
Tuesday morning, Dad drops me off at CarMax at dawn. New Ignition Cylinder is in. Got them to check for Passive Security--there is none. Also, could they make me a Remote for unlocking it? Nope, car doesn't have that package installed. Total damage, circa $300. Current Mood: aggravated Current Music: "South Nashville Blues" [live] (Steve Earle and Del McCoury)

09:36 am - Tuesday Night's Wacky Dream exterior, a restored Roman piazza, night.
I, intrepid movie director Bruce Somethingorother, thank the crowd of thousands for coming out to watch. Chaotic preparations for the shoot continue. Technical glitches are solved, and I give a long-winded speech to the crew. "Action!"
Filming begins outside, then moves through the interior of the piazza (illogical, yes, I know), a series of huge rectangular chambers. The complex was left intact from the age of the Ceasars, then rebuilt as a medieval cathedral, then rebuilt again as a shopping mall. This leads to architectural juxtapositions: Roman columns with modern windows in them, Sunglasses Hut kiosks in front of Renassiance fountains, etc.
That makes it the appropriate place to film the movie, a retelling of The Passion Of The Christ as a rock opera. Think 'Jesus Christ Superstar' with better lyrics, a shorter focus, more Strindbergian Expressionism, and much less heresy.
The Sanhedrin meets. This is just an excuse for the real action, a series of musical vingettes demonstrating the (stereo)types of Christian believers through the centuries. Clothing and behavior are a mishmash of anachronistic styles. Pieces of the sets fly in and out as the action whirls. It's all one continuing Action, captured with multiple cameras.
Jesus is brought to trial (etc etc, look up the sequence yourself). The biblical story is a framework for dozens of song-and-dance numbers. SHOWTUNES~! explicate the text.
The Devil has several big solos, during which he writhes around on the walls. The thespianism continues in the tunnels between the main chambers, during transitions from Scene to Scene. The shoot takes all night. Scores of crewmembers stand around desultorily, eating fruit and keeping cool. At the climax, many of the characters apotheosize. I return to my hotel. fin
Subplots: "What is THAT doing in the shot?!" "We can pixelate it out later." My wife is throwing me a surprise party afterward, which is why there's people on the set I can't account for. The actor playing Judas wants more screentime. My feet get badly blistered.

04:01 pm - in which I tell you how I accidently ripped off a store. Went shopping for new seatcovers. Saw a pair I liked @ Target, and @ only $19.99, which is cheap. Took them to the cashier, who rang them up @ $39.99. Objected. He, instead of doing a Price Check, axed his supervisor. She okayed using the lower price. Paid.
Whilst leaving, I realized that someone had probably just put the box on the wrong shelf, so I was looking at the single-seatcover price. Oops. Thus at one stroke I have made up for a lifetime of accidental overcharges at stores. Current Mood: guilty Current Music: "No You Girls Never Know" (Franz Ferdinand)

01:26 am - my long-threatened update Sometimes it is good to take six weeks off. Easter was lovely, as were several other holidays before it.
other recent happenings:
Was, through a long chain of circumstances, given a free ticket to go see Doc Severinson with the Nashville Symphony. (Why is it that every time I go downtown the whole place is overrun with a different group of loutish hillbillies than last time?) It was interesting, tho not the Hot Club du Paris.
Willow got a skin fungus. Imagine an ear infection and a urinary-tract infection that are the same thing and are all over your skin and under your hair. Yes, gross. Had to give her pills and whatnot. She's much better, but the vet thinks there's an underlying allergy that causes it and wants us to switch her to a special diet, which means no scraps or treats either. I can't do it.
Went with Mom and Dad to a singing in North Carolina. Memorable mainly for its literary associations, as we spent a morning at Carl Sandburg's house. He collected books and goats.
Twice went drinkin' with old high-school buddy Tom. Even met some NEW people! More to come. Current Mood: productive Current Music: "My Back Pages" (Bob Dylan)

10:53 am - collected Churchy notes Got many many compliments on my Mardi Gras tie yesterday; didn't tell anyone it was $6 at Accent Annex.
Between funerals, errand-running, and oh yeah actual worship, I was in the church building 8 days out of an 11-day stretch, probably for the first time since Vacation Bible School a thousand years ago.
I don't know what to do about the H + E situation, or the very different M + B situation, or the F/B problem.
Alan is leaving a year sooner than I expected, but that's alright.
